Our shelter for stray cats "Lucy’s House" was opened in Kazan in February 2014 and initially was located almost in the center of the city - on Dostoevsky Street.
The history of each cat that had lived in our shelter is unique: some were picked up on the street, some were taken away from the an old lady, who had 60 animals living together in a small apartment, some were found injured (for example, volunteers picked up one week and toothless cat, they thought she is quite old – but after they realized that all was the fault of her former owners: a young kitty with beaten teeth, and in her stomach, during medical procedures, were found several bullets).
In an ordinary garage, all the comfortable conditions for living animals were organized there: cleanliness, the necessary temperature was maintained, there was a light, medicine and food. But, of course, there were disadvantages such as a premise, lack of water supply, central heating, windows and sunlight, an elementary place.
After a year and a half of the functioning of this first shelter, it was decided to move to a more spacious location with all the necessary conditions, the repair was done by volunteers, and at the moment we have a quarantine block and two floors, and one floor is equipped for cats with disabilities where they receive special treatment! In June 2015, the move took place, now our furry friends can enjoy the play area, walks through the shelter and see the nature from the windows (with the necessary security) :)
According to the idea of volunteers, no cat should live in a shelter for a long time (ideally). There they are expected to receive a special training course in order to meet with the new owner: the animal undergoes a full medical examination, if necessary, it is provided with a treatment including sterilization and vaccinations. Another important task for volunteers is the socialization of the animal, since some of the pets who are trapped here are so intimidated that they are afraid of any rustle, and they are even afraid of eating. As a result, healthy, good-natured, well-fed cats, already accustomed to the tray and nail, are obtained from dirty, untreated and sick animals.
Most important is that, each of these animals will be given for free to the new owner (no fees). For volunteers, one charge is important - love and caring for the animal, and it is also very important to let the animal get used to itself and become a real family member.
